Welcome to the website of Youth Blast: Finding Common Ground. Youth Blast is a collaborative project that seeks to address some of the social issues present in the Northern Suburbs of Darwin. Organisations collaborating on this project include Melaleuca Refugee Centre, Mission Australia Youth Initiatives, The SHAK and Energy Cruz (Red Cross), Multicultural Council of the Northern Territory, Multicultural Youth Council of the Northern Territory, Brown’s Mart Community Arts, and the Northern Territory Police. The project is funded by the Northern Territory Government.

Savanna Holloway

Savanna Holloway was Coordinator of the Youth Blast Project and a youth worker with Melaleuca Refugee Centre. She died on 1 May 2008, in an accident on Sydney Harbour. Below is a statement from Melaleuca Refugee Centre about Savanna:

Youth Blast Blue Light Dance Party at Chambers Crescent Theatre

The second Youth Blast Blue Light Dance Party was a big success at Chambers Crescent Theatre, Malak Shopping Centre, on 1st September. It ran from 7:00 to 10:00 PM; about 83 young people attended the party. Many thanks again to the Blue Light Disco Association and Police Officers who were again present on the night, making it safe for the young participants. Thanks also to Salah Protective Services for assisting with security. The SHAK Kids Advisory Task Force and SHAK workers were there to help organise and manage the event.

Youth Blast Dance Party, 17th of Aug 2007, SHAK Youth Resource Centre

On the 17th of August the SHAK Youth Resource Centre the Youth Blast Dance Party took place between 7pm to 10pm with thanks to the support of the Blue Light Disco Association and the Darwin City Council who sponsored them. Also, a big thankyou goes to the School Based Police Officers who were present on the night, assisting in making the night more fun and safe for the young participants.

Developing Soccer Skills

Six more young people joined the Energy Cruz program for an afternoon of soccer skills and a game.  The Youth Blast program provides free transport and access to the program for young clients of Melaleuca Refugee Centre, The SHAK, and Mission Australia's youth programs.  Next week the Energy Cruz soccer and softball program will finish up, with indoor cricket starting the first week of September.  For info on how to get enrolled in the indoor cricket, contact Mission Australia or Melaleuca Refugee Centre. 

Review: Youth Fiesta of 20 July 2007

The Youth Fiesta on Friday evening 20th July at the Filipino Community Centre, Marrara, was planned, organised and managed by the young people of the MYCNT. It was the first activity of this newly formed MCNT’s youth sub-committee; as well as the first funded activity of the Youth Blast funding program administered by a consortium of service providers including MCNT.
